BIA Guidance Strategy
Position Statement (August 2024)
A key aim of the BIA is to provide clinical and workforce guidance that is of benefit to our membership. The BIA have a 30-year history of publishing guidelines and provide input into national guidance produced by other organisations. The development of comprehensive large topic clinical guidelines has evolved over recent years due to an increasingly complex evidence base in many areas and a desire to ensure broad stakeholder and lay representation in the process and consequent increase in required human and financial resource. Appropriately, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) have taken on development of much of this clinical guidance. BIA and its members have actively contributed to reviews of NICE guidelines since its inception and currently respond to x consultations on average each year.
Updating Current Live Guidelines, Producting Workforce Guidance
From 2025, therefore, BIA will pause the development of large topic systematic clinical guidelines and will instead focus on updating its current live guidelines and production of workforce guidance via our subcommittees and smaller topic clinical guidance, in collaboration with other organisations where appropriate. The includes guidance to support day to day infection practice and workforce sustainability.
