Early Career Researchers’ Mentoring
Early Career Researchers’ Committee Mentorship Scheme
The BIA Early Career Researchers’ Committee Mentorship Scheme is a developmental mentorship scheme catering to prospective and established researchers in an infection related field.
Aims
The scheme aims to facilitate a productive relationship through which mentees benefit from the research expertise and experiences of their mentors and are empowered in their development as a researcher. The scheme allows mentors to reflect on their careers and use pre-existing skills to contribute to the further development of the scientific community, supporting mentees through their achievements.
Mentees
The scheme is open to individuals interested in infection research from all professional backgrounds including students. Where possible, the scheme aims to match mentees to mentors in the same profession with similar research interests.
Mentors
We encourage academics from all levels of experience to apply to be mentors. The scheme aims to match individuals based on the requirements of the mentee and it is anticipated that, particularly more junior mentees, may benefit from the experience of current PhD students or post-docs (or equivalent).
Scheme Principles
Mentors will not already be directly involved in the mentee’s career progression, enabling a partnership founded on collaborative development. The mentoring relationship is distinct from supervision, coaching or counselling.
Though specific goals and boundaries will be decided by mentors and mentees in collaboration, to join the scheme a mentor must be able to dedicate one hour per calendar quarter.
We anticipate initiation of the mentoring process to be mentee led. Once mentors and mentees have been paired, we expect mentees to initiate contact with their mentor to arrange an initial meeting at a time and in a format that is convenient to both parties.
