Doctors/dentists with a PhD/equivalent, normally ST3 or above, who are still in higher specialty training. GPs can apply after completing training.

Requires suitable specialty training position/NTN. Usually runs until CCT; this is an integrated academic-training post, not an applicant-led research fellowship.

Normally 50% clinical / 50% academic. NIHR generally funds 50% salary for specialty trainees plus associated research/training support. Up to 4 years FT / 6 years PT.

Recruitment annually, through individual university/region CL posts.

Candidates for the 2026 NIHR CLs must not commence in post before 1 April 2026 and must be active in post no later than 1 September 2027.
