Mid-career researchers ready to lead a substantial programme. For health professionals, clinical training must normally be completed – therefore primarily consultant/post-CCT level.

Must demonstrate trajectory towards international research leadership. If salary funded, normally ≤20% non-research/clinical activity; craft specialties up to 40%.

Usually 8 years. Salary + team and extensive programme costs. No absolute cap, but annual expenditure is normally <£250,000/year excluding applicant salary; higher requests receive additional scrutiny.
